You mention some things that are causing you a lot of pain but you also say that “you don’t care as long as I have my xbox”. You may likely be feeling both ways – terrible about losing so many important parts of your life but also not wanting to give up the things that seem to make you feel good. That is what addictions do. If they did not make us feel good, we would not be susceptible to be addicted in the first place. You feel like you needs those things to get through the day.
So the scary thing you are facing is giving up something that you love.
The important thing to consider is that indulging in those habits is only giving you short term benefits. You feel good while doing it, maybe some relief for a brief time after. But over the long run, it is hurting you in a very significant way. Some bad things have happened and those addictions are to blame.
Recognizing the problem and seeking help is a great first step. So you are on your way to recovery!
Seeking professional help will be a good way to start. But it is not possible for everyone. Trying to slow down and understand what you are doing — how you feel before indulging in these activities, during and after. Start examining your behavior, keep a journal. Developing awareness is a wonderful skill and can help you get back in control of your life. It is not easy – but you can do it. It requires discipline and the desire to improve your life.
Set a goal – like getting back in touch with you kids and having a healthy relationship with them. With the right motivation, change becomes easier.
Good luck!
