Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, by Hunter S Thompson.
It’s not about drug addiction or self-destruction per se, but the protagonist is constantly trying to escape reality through the inventive use of a huge drug collection, which is kinda the same thing, I suppose.
Oh, and it’s one of the most important books of the twentieth century.
